A thought leadership event to promote the importance of knowledge and data as key drivers of sustainable development. The work carried out by the UNDP Regional Bureau for Arab States through the Knowledge Project and the Arab Development Portal (ADP), but also through its general investment in knowledge production, innovation, technology and development of knowledge platforms, will be described as a best practice in this regard.
The event will present and disseminate the Global Knowledge Index 2017 (GKI) and its findings and discuss how it can be used to inform the design of sustainable development policies and plans. Similarly, the ADP will present its SDGs tracking tool as an instrument that can help governments, development practitioners and citizens to monitor countries’ progress against the SDGs.
Finally, the event will be an opportunity to celebrate the UNDP’s partnership with the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation (MBRF) on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the collaboration on the knowledge project.
The event will bring together around 100 participants including high-level representatives from Member States, experts on knowledge and data, academia and relevant UN staff.
Key Event Highlights

Global Knowledge Index (GKI)

The Global Knowledge Index 2017 is a milestone in the field of knowledge, as it is the only index that measures knowledge at the global level. It is used to identify the efforts of countries in the production, localization and transfer of knowledge to achieve the knowledge-based society. Policymakers shall benefit from the index to assess the areas of weakness and strength at the level of the sectors forming the knowledge society.

10th anniversary of the UNDP’s Partnership with MBRF on the Knowledge Project

The partnership between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation (MBRF) was launched in 2008, with the establishment of the Arab Knowledge Project (AKP).

Under the umbrella of this partnership, the Knowledge Project has published three regional reports about knowledge in the Arab region, two of which involved original field research and country case studies, the Arab Knowledge Index 2015 and 2016, and the Arab Reading Index 2016. Then came the Global Knowledge Index in 2017, which is the only index that measures knowledge on the global level as a broad concept that is intricately related to sustainable development.

The Knowledge4All portal was launched in 2015 as a digital hub for knowledge, followed by a Mobile App in 2016.

UNDP and MBRF had built a remarkable partnership throughout the past decade, sharing a vision of promoting and strengthening knowledge-based sustainable development in the Arab region and beyond.
